MOLTKES PALÆ

FAQ-03.jpg

How old is Moltkes Bar?

The Moltkes Palæ book dates the bar to sometime in the 1960s. The liquor cabinet appears to be significantly older; perhaps it once served as a bookcase for Count A.W. Moltke when he had his steward’s offices here.

How extensive was the refurbishment process?

We were determined to keep the original look of the space so we did only what was necessary: The ceiling and upper walls were painted and we brought in new chairs as the old ones were on the verge of collapse. We also removed the dated green lampshades.

The rest of the refurbishment was simple, involving a lot of elbow grease and a forgiving attitude toward the wear and tear that the bar has sustained over the years.

On your website you call Moltkes Bar a ’speakeasy’ – what’s that?

A speakeasy was an establishment that sold illegal alcoholic beverages in the US during Prohibition (1920-1932), the period in which the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors was outlawed. The expression appears to come from the way a guest would order a drink without arousing suspicion – the bartenders asked them to be quiet and ’speak easy’!

Why don’t you have a sign on the building facade?

Like the best speakeasies, we don't advertise, but everyone is welcome and you don't need a special knock or password to get in!

Can I reserve a table?

Certainly. Just call 33 14 80 66 to reserve a table. Bar stools are available on a first come, first served basis.

Is the bar available to rent for parties and private functions?

Absolutely, as long as you use our bartenders and servers, and order your food and beverages from us as well.
